LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

Getting married in a foreign country can sometimes be daunting. It's imperative that you understand the local laws and ensure all your paperwork is in place, or you could find your big day might hit problems.

Portugal has recently made the process simpler. However, you will still need the help of a Portuguese translator and it helps if you use a professional planner. We know the local laws and have all the right contacts in the town councils to ensure your wedding day runs smoothly.

Portugal has also legalised same sex marriages, and civil ceremonies can be conducted in a location of your choice.

In short, all European (EU) citizens can have a civil ceremony in Portugal, provided they have a valid European passport, a certified birth certificate, and a certificate of non-impediment (divorce and death certificates if applicable). These certificates need to be translated into Portuguese by a certified translator. For non-EU citizens, a legal ceremony is still possible, but can involve a few more steps. Please contact us to discuss your marriage if you are from outside the EU.

The civil process is still quite intricate however, and should be handled by a professional. There are many steps that need to be completed correctly to avoid delays that can compromise your wedding day. Luxury Algarve Weddings will guide you every step of the way, and we can guarantee that if you follow our recommendations, there is nothing to worry about!

We can also arrange religious ceremonies in a variety of beautiful churches. We understand the requirements and can liaise with the priest on your behalf or alongside you.

Alternatively, you can have a blessing which can be performed by a religious minister (Catholic or Anglican) or a celebrant, a person who is fully trained and can conduct a non-religious ceremony in the location of your choice. We work with some lovely celebrants - male and female - who can help you write your vows according to your own personal wishes, making them romantic, personal and very special. You may also wish to include one of the many unity joining rituals to enhance your ceremony, as well as of course exchanging rings or gifts. Contact us for further details.

Please note: we only handle civil ceremonies where we are the full wedding planner. We do not offer a ceremony-only service.
