Wedding in a vineyard

Wedding in a vineyard

Paul & Alex are British but have lived in the Algarve for some time. Both in their thirties, they are very laid back: he is a website designer and she is an author. Neither of them ‘like a lot of fuss’ as they would say, but as this was the first marriage for both of them, they wanted to incorporate a number of traditional elements into their big day.

The brief

A mix of tradition and informality, blending their idea of a very British wedding with elements of the more relaxed lifestyle they enjoy by living in Portugal. Around 50 guests were invited, a mix of friends and family who live in the Algarve, together with those flying in from the UK. The couple wanted a standard-style ceremony, but followed by as informal an atmosphere as possible for the drinks, reception and entertainment.

Paul was working at the time in the Middle East, on a long-term contract, which left the bride - helped of course by Luxury Algarve Weddings - to make almost all the decisions (no change there, then!). The first was the venue - and we found the perfect one for them just outside Portimao: a combined vineyard and outdoor art gallery. With a mid-May date, we were fairly certain the sun would be shining, allowing them to have the ceremony in the vineyard’s delightful walled garden, followed by an up-market barbecue under the covered, but still semi-outdoor, events area. The wine, of course, came from the vineyard, and a top team of outside caterers was brought in to prepare and serve the food.

The vineyard also offers a range of accommodation, including a large villa with pool (taken over for several days by the main wedding party) together with rustic and apartment-style units, which were booked by a number of the overseas guests.

The combination of the rural setting and the modern sculptures within the grounds also worked well for photo opportunities, and as the wedding took over the venue on an exclusive use basis, there was no need to worry about annoying the neighbours or other holidaymakers by partying into the early hours.

The catering team arrived early, to start setting up the garden for the ceremony, the event area for the reception, and to begin cooking. They were then followed by the hairdresser, make-up artist, DJ and photographer, all recommended by Luxury Algarve Weddings. Guests began arriving at 4pm for a 5pm ceremony, then following drinks and photos, the wedding party sat down for a relaxed barbecue dinner at 7pm. After the speeches and thank-yous, the entertainment began in earnest, with the party atmosphere continuing well into the night.

The couple described it as ‘their perfect day.’ Family and friends had a great time, Paul and Alex really enjoyed the ‘fuss’ of being centre-stage, and they came away a selection of wonderful photographs and some fabulous memories. Alex, who by her own admission is not a ‘girlie’ girl, looked beautiful, and Paul looked dapper, wearing a suit for perhaps the first time in his life. It’s amazing what weddings can do!
